Distribution parts were probably not designed yet by Ludwig Apfelbeck for the type 4 OHC heads as none of that is visible in his book and no parts of that sort were in the acquisition many moos ago. So we had to come up with something ourselves.
The design objective for the cam drive was to keep it as stable as possible since we wanted to be able to obtain high RPM operation. Also keeping it in a stock engine bay without cutting into a bug’s original sheet metal, was a big wish.
As the cylinder banks are not exactly opposed to one another, one side would have a longer extending camshaft then the other. Longer extensions are less stable or the nose bearing takes a bigger load and they also extend further into the engine bay. With an ‘in between shaft’ it seemed possible to keep both cams exactly the same (length) and have equal load per side. It does give some extra complexity, but that was deemed worth it. Time will tell if it works out like anticipated!
